Kolkata Knight Riders Won the First IPL Match

Kolkata Knight Riders beat defending champion Deccan Chargers by 11 runs in the opening match of the third edition of Indian Premier League on Friday.

Earlier, the Deccan Chargers won the toss and elected to field first at the sticky wicket of DYP Stadium Mumbai.

At one time, the Knight Riders were struggling at 57/4 after 10 overs but swashbucking half centuries from Shah an Matthews has set up the match perfectly for an exciting run chase.

At the end of the 19 overs the Knight Riders were 151/4. But when they finished their batting it was 161 for 4.

Angelo Mathews managed to hit 65 runs in 46 balls. Mathews (65 not out) and Shah (58 not out) put up an unbeaten century partnership as Knight Riders, from none for two in the first over and 31/4 in the sixth, rallied to cross 150-run mark at the DY Patil Stadium.

Mathews reached his half-century off only 28 balls with the help of four fours and three sixes while Shah was slightly behind him, needing 43 balls to complete his half-ton that included three fours and two sixes.

Gilchrist commented, “We have a long way to go”

Sourav Ganguly said, ” We just wanted to stay on the ground for the whole twenty overs. We sure need improvement in the game, espcially fielding.”

Kolkata Knight Riders: 161 for 4 in 20 overs (Angelo Mathews 65 not out, Owais Shah 58 not out; Chaminda Vaas 2/22).

Deccan Chargers: 150 for 7 in 20 overs (Adam Gilchrist 54, VVS Laxman 22; C Langeveldt 2/26).
